She stood across from him in the wooded clearing, tamping down her recently boiled over anger, struggling with what to say.  He didn’t deserve this.  Didn’t deserve her anger, or the pain she caused him. She stepped toward him.  She played with her hands like she always did when she was unsure, but her eyes were sincere.
"I am sorry if I hurt you in all of this.  It was never intended."
He looked away, not wanting to deal with her apology, the wounds she inflicted, however unintentionally, still painful and raw.
"Tony," she piped up, wanting him to really listen to her; to understand.   "I care too much about our…" she broke off, searching for a word to define their relationship. "f-f-f-friendship.  I do not want it to be awkward between us."
"Hey," he said,  and kissed her on the forehead.  He pulled back slightly, his eyes searching hers.  He was met with sadness and some degree of confusion.  He leaned closer, pressing a gentle kiss to the tip of her nose.  Another to her cheek.  He drew back once again, still unsure.  He leaned back in slowly, kissing the corner of her mouth.  As he leaned back, she pulled him back, capturing his lips with hers. His hands, still grasping her upper arms, drifted to cradle her to him.  One cupping her head, the other resting at her hip.  He pressed several small kisses  to her lips before pulling away completely.
"Do you feel that?" he asked, his voice husky.
"Yes." She said with a nod, her entire body buzzing from his kiss.
"Do you really think friendship is the best word for what we have?"
"I did not have a better one."
"And now?"
"Now I am not sure. I know what I want.  But I also know that  I have hurt you immeasurably. Even now, even after…I do not know where we stand."
He wasn’t sure what to say to that.  He wanted to tell her it was okay.  That he had forgiven her and that she didn’t have anything to apologize for. But he couldn’t.  He didn’t want to have this conversation, this fight. The last time he tried, it didn’t turn out well.  But the questions that burned in his mind would not be answered unless he could bring himself to ask.
"I thought we were working towards something.  Something special."
"We were.  We are. But as each day passes, I see the pain in your eyes, I see the destruction that I have caused,  and i cannot help but think that with one stupid mistake, with one…lapse in judgement…I have ruined everything,” she said, her voice thick with emotion.
"It wasn’t one thing or another.  It was everything put together.  Ever since your father’s death, you haven’t trusted me.  All you’ve done is shut me out.  Even when I tried to help you, you didn’t want anything to with me.  And then finding out about Adam,” he bit out his name with disdain. “It’s just too much.”
"I understand," she said, fighting to keep tears from forming in her eyes.  She did this.  She caused his pain.  She brought it on herself.  She berated herself for thinking she could treat him like she did.  For allowing her grief to shut her off to him.
"I don’t think you do.  You’re standing here like I’m ending it with you."
"You are not?" she asked, tears winning out.
"No.  I just want you to understand.  This thing we have, Ziva, I don’t know how to define it.  I don’t know how we should go about it.  But I know that I can’t live without it.  Without you.  But you can’t keep pushing me away." he said sternly. "I can’t keep wondering if I’m the only one in this."
She placed her palm over his heart, the other on the side of his face, and looked directly into his eyes.  ”You are not.”
He took the hand on his face in his, his large hand stroking hers gently.  ”Answer one thing for me?”
"Yes."
"Do you trust me?"
"With my life," she said without a thought.
"One more thing."
She nodded subtly.
He pressed out the question that had been burning in his chest for days. “Does he mean something to you?”
She thought her answer through carefully, speaking slowly as to get her wording right. “As a friend, a former colleague, I suppose I value him.   But I do not have feelings for him.  I could never feel for anyone else what I feel for you.  Tony you are…” she shook her head, staring at his chest, worrying his collar with her fingers,  ”everything.”
He took her face in his hands, pressing his mouth firmly to hers. She sighed into him, opening her mouth for him, his tongue coming into contact with hers immediately, the kiss more passionate than the one before.
"We’re gonna figure this out," he said as his lips finally left hers. "I just need some time."
She could only nod, her heart and mind still racing.  He kissed her chastely one last time before taking her hand easily and making their way back to Gibbs.
As they were walking back to the cabin, a small smile crossed his face. They would be okay.
